WISE MEN FROM THE EAST
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2: 1-6
Wise men form the East came to Jerusalem saying “where is he who has been born King of the Jews?” When Herod heard the news he inquired and he was told that “in Bethlehem of Judea, for so it was written by the prophet” (Emphasis mine).
I would like to comment on two things that this scripture reveals. First of all, the birth of Jesus was prophesied and recorded for all to hear and see. It was not a secret because it was plainly written so that God’s people can prepare to meet the Messiah. But sadly, many of the people living in Jerusalem, who must have heard the prophecy being read in the temple many many times missed the opportunity to witness the birth of Jesus. Perhaps the message was so close and too familiar.
Secondly, The wise men only saw “his star” when it rose and they came to Jerusalem to worship him. Is it not amazing that some people heard the message and saw the written scroll but it made very little difference to their way of living? However, some wise men who didn't have that privilege because they didn't live in Jerusalem, but they were willing to travel to Jerusalem to worship the new born King! It is often said that those who are nearest to the church are sometimes the furthest from God!
We live in an age where biblical prophecies are unfolding at an alarming rate, yet more and more people are choosing to ignore God’s warning! I believe the year 2014 will unleash God’s favour on the church, but are we ready? Let us cease this opportunity and resolve that we will not miss the signs of His second coming! God bless you.
